What cookies does Fairfax Digital set for login?

A cookie is a small piece of information that our servers give to your server. A cookie may be either a session cookie or a persistent cookie. A session cookie is stored in your browser and disappears when you close your browser. A persistent cookie is stored on your hard drive and continues to exist, even if you close your browser. None of the persistent cookies written to your hard drive by the Fairfax Digital login process contain any of your personal information.

Fairfax Digital uses both session and persistent cookies to log you on. These cookies are set by the Fairfax Digital site you are using, and our login server signon.f2.com.au. It is important that your browser's security and privacy settings allow these cookies to be set, or you may not be able to take advantage of all the features provided by Fairfax Digital.

If you are having problems then you can check if cookies are working properly on your browser.

The information can only accessed from the internet using your username and password. Nobody can use your account unless they know your username and password.

It is important that you logout from Fairfax Digital after you have finished. This will ensure that nobody else can use your account while you are away from your computer. This is especially important if you are accessing Fairfax Digital from a shared computer or an internet cafe.

You can improve the security of your account by selecting a secure password.

Is my password secure?

The most important part of protecting your password is selecting a secure password and not telling anybody what it is.

We then encrypt your password and store it in one of our secure databases so that nobody else can find it. When you type your password into the login page, it is encrypted before sending it across the internet. This ensures that nobody can snoop on your connection and read your password.

Note: Fairfax Digital uses JavaScript to encrypt your password. If you disable JavaScript on your browser then the password is not encrypted before being sent across the internet. This will reduce the protection of your password. We highly recommend that you enable JavaScript before logging onto Fairfax Digital.

How do I select a secure password?

Fairfax Digital allows you to choose any password you like. But here are a few tips to make your password more secure:

  • Choose a password that you can remember, so that you do not need to write it down.
  • Avoid telling anybody else your password.
  • Try to choose a password that is more than six characters long.
  • Use a mixture of upper case and lower case letters.
  • Include numbers and/or special characters such as ! @ $ % & *.
  • Avoid using a name as your password. Using your name, your partner's name or your child's name is very easy for another person to guess.
  • Avoid using words that are easily found in the dictionary. Try combining two words together and using misspelt words.

Remember, your password is case sensitive. That means you must type it exactly every time: upper and lower case letters included.

Why do I return to the login page when I click the "Back" button on my browser?

If you are viewing a page after you have just logged in and then press the back button on your browser, you will go back to the login page. This is because the login page was the last page that your browser displayed to you. You do not need to login again.

If you want to view the page that you were previously viewing just hit the "Back" button again and you will go where you expected. You are still logged in and still able to view other protected pages.

Why do I return to the login page when I click the "Login" button?

This will generally happen if your browser is not accepting the cookies that we need to log you on. See above for more information on cookies. If you are still having problems then you can check if cookies are working correctly on your browser.

Why do I return to the login page after I have not used Fairfax Digital for a while?

Fairfax Digital has a two hour idle time out on all login sessions. If you do not use Fairfax Digital for over two hours your session will time out and you will have to login again.
